CYCLING IN THE NORTH PENNINES

The routes are designed for reasonably fit and experienced cyclists. They are generally not suitable for children.

We have designed the cycle routes starting in Stanhope as a convenient start point for covering the cycle rides in this guide.

These are designed as a rough guide only and can be modified to suit the individual cyclist.

We would like to hear from you if you have any comments or suggestions to improve the routes, or your experiences on any of the rides.

About the author

Dave King

I first started cycling at the age of 13 when I bought a second hand "Mercian" from a friends brother. Although the bike was several sizes to big it was my first introduction to cycling. Two years later after leaving school and going to Technical College I met John Morris a fellow cyclist who was a member of the local cycling club Ferryhill Wheelers. Johnny persuaded me to go out with the club on a winter club run, a complete novice and totally unprepared I agreed. Forty mile later I was laid by the side of the road with the dreaded "Bonk", my first introduction to real cycling was a baptism of fire.

I joined Ferryhill Wheelers and started road racing first as a junior and then on through the senior ranks. I raced for several years until I married and had a family, with the extra family and work commitments I retired from cycling for 18 years. When my sons were independent I got the bike out again and started training. It was a long arduous task but I eventually got fit and started to enjoy my cycling again.

Now my cycling is mainly done alone or with my youngest son Rick and his friends on their "steady Saturday morning ride" to Penny's Cafe at Barnard Castle. I've ridden slower road races!!!!

My love now is recreational cycling in the North Pennines and calling at the local cafe's for well needed refreshment, I hope to see you there.
