CYCLING IN TYNEDALE, WEST & EAST ALLEN VALLEYS
Langley Castle & The Garden Station at Langley
One of the most
picturesque routes in the North Pennines and my favourite ride.
This cycling circuit visits the stunning countryside of Tynedale around
the Allen Valleys.
Starting in Stanhope the route climbs out of Rookhope over Wolfcleugh
Common passing ancient lead mining works and into the East Allen valley at
Allenheads. Stunning views of the valley as the road follows the main dale
road to the old town of Allendale and on to Whitfield in the East Allen
Valley.
From Whitfield the route follows the
small but beautiful lanes on Wards Way over the 25% climb of The Steel to
the Allen Banks Nature Reserve and Ripley Hall. Leaving Allen Banks
the route skirts the impressive 14th century Langley Castle and on down
the valley through Little Switzerland to Ninebanks. The route then follows
the valley road to climb out of the Allen Valley to join the climb of
Killhope Moor before dropping into the Wear Valley and on to Stanhope

Turn RIGHT (West) onto A689 for 0.5 mi

At (2), bear RIGHT (North-West) onto Local
road (3) to Rookhope (Lintzgarth Arch)

Continue over climb of Wolfcleugh Common to Allenheads

At Allenheads follow the valley road to Allendale (5)
In Allendale market place turn LEFT take road to
Whitfield (Whitfield Village Pantry)

After the descent of Common Bank at the junction of the A686 turn RIGHT

After 400yds turn LEFT towards Haltwhistle. At the summit of
Whiteshield
Side bank turn RIGHT at the T junction proceed on local roads towards Bardon Mill, continuing on Ward Way
to the 25% decent and climb of (7)

Continue on local roads past Ridley Hall and turn RIGHT past the entrance to
(Allen Banks Nature Reserve)

Keeping the entrance on your RIGHT continue on local roads over
Allen Banks to join the
A686 (8)

At the road junction turn RIGHT (Langley Castle)
(Garden Station) (9) continuing
on the A686 for 7.7 miles until the LEFT turn to Ninebanks(10)

Continue through Ninebanks climbing Chapel Bank
towards Carr Shield and Coalcleugh (11)

Leaving Coalcleugh climb Black Hill
and follow the road towards Nenthead joining the A689,

LEFT onto the climb of Killhope.
11:12 Follow the Wear Valley road past the
(Killhope Lead Mining Centre) to Lanehead, descending School Hill into Cowshill.
keep on the main road until Daddry Shield (14)

to Brotherlee (16) Horsley Hall

The Hills
Wolfcleugh Common
Height 1745 ft
Length approx 5 miles
Steepest section 1 in 10
Starting from the arch at Lintzgarth the hill climbs gradually up past the
redundant lead mine on Wolfcleugh Common.
A long climb but not difficult wonderful views of the Rookhope valley.
Whiteshield Side
Height approx 1200 ft
Steepest section 1 in 7
Starting from the A686 the road climbs past the tiny church of St John's
at Whitfield to the T junction with Ward Way.
The Steel
Height approx 900 ft
Steepest section 25% (1 in 4)
Short sharp descent onto a small bridge and climb on narrow lane over
fell.
Allen Banks

A narrow climb onto the top of Allen Bank.
